Kidz South Farnborough 17th May 2022

I spent the day at Kidz to Adultz South held at Farnborough International Exhibition & Conference Centre. It was lovely to see friends I had not seen for a long time and catch up. What was unexpected was finding new friends. Anam came up with her husband and complimented me on my outfit. Today I learned about their company, ABR therapy. These exhibitions are about discovering and learning new products/therapies/charities that build my knowledge base and help me with my job. I have a passion for reviewing school sites’ accessibility plans and looking for any new equipment that can help staff and the young people they work with. I love all exhibitions to see what is new and what I may need to recommend to a school to help improve accessibility for all.

Wokingham Council Corporate Transport Unit, 17th May 2022.

Training for school transport providers

On behalf of the Wokingham Council corporate transport unit, I ran a course for corporate transport providers/contractors who provide transport for school routes. One of the main subjects covered was focussing on the different types of Crelling Harnesses and best practices when fitting them.

Seatbelts & Harnesses for Children & Adults with Special Needs – Crelling Harnesses Ltd
It was lovely to see friends and have fun using the training dolls to fit the harnesses; after that, the adults paired up and practised using the harness on each other. The transport providers all embraced the course. We discussed many topics, including:
Do transport providers know how to deploy their tail lift in a power failure?
Where do they position the wheelchairs on their minibuses?
I have another training session booked for next week with a different group.

School corporate transport providers had fun. They learnt about the safe use of harnesses on minibuses.

The St John Ambulance in Woodley Reading, Berkshire,

Today I had a fantastic day, and I would like to thank Mary Kimani for being such a fantastic trainer.
I decided to book a place on the one-day Emergency First Aid at work course; since I am now a self-employed Moving and Handling Trainer going out and about, I thought it would be good to refresh my knowledge.
A retired couple, who were also refreshing their knowledge, booked initially onto the course as a close friend had a heart attack many years ago. They are alive today because of the actions of a passer-by who had first aid training. So they want to be able to help people if required; I found that very touching.
Thank you, Mary. Thank you to the people who attended the course for making it such a brilliant group. The day that flew by this course exceeded my expectations.

Today like many people, I have been out enjoying the sun. My husband and I went for a paddle on the river. The car park was full, and all the roads were packed. With a long way to walk with many bits of kit, we made a quick trolley with a canoe paddle and our sail ties. My husband has more ideas, so we will hone the design further. But as a quick relief to ease my tired arms after our paddle, it was brilliant. If you need help in your setting completing manual handling risk assessments for a young person, give me a call, and I would be happy to help you.

My training doll Ben

People Moving & Handling, or simply Moving & Handling, are terms commonly used to refer to the Manual Handling of people. It allows us to differentiate it from the traditional usage of Manual Handling, which usually refers to physically manipulating inanimate objects and loads.

When I leave my Ben unattended in the car, I find it quite handy to leave a sign.
Several times, I’ve returned to my car to find people looking through the window. I tell them what I use them for, and I often get asked what the difference is.

Would you mess with the dragon?

When choosing equipment for moving and handling tasks, we all like different things. Maintaining our posture is important when assisting anyone with a transfer. I bought these chairs for my old workplace.
I’m so excited. I have just bought myself a JollyBack chair. Sam is desperate to sit on it, but he knows better than to mess with the dragon.https://jollyback.com.
Sam tried to bribe the dragon with his slinky, but the dragon did not work.
The chair will accompany me on my next practical course in moving and handling. It’s a brilliant aid, and I can’t wait to take it with me. Don’t hesitate to contact me about the moving and handling training and support I can offer to your setting. Sam and I are happy to travel. As for the dragon, he will stay at home unless specifically requested.

Posture

Am I practising for The Great British Bake Off?
I got caught by my husband checking on the fruit cake.
My posture was not too bad; I might have had eye-level cookers if I had designed my kitchen.
It does make me wonder why The Great British Bake Off does not have eye-level cookers for the contestants. I suppose it has become part of the programme to squat/kneeling to look at the cakes cooking.
But saying that, the producers could install eye-level cookers to help look after the contestant’s backs.
After all, we all are at different levels of fitness.
Remember, if you find something challenging to do in your workplace due to your fitness levels, talk to your employer, as they can make reasonable adjustments for you. It helps protects you and the people who work with you.
Meanwhile, I must wait a few days for my cake to mature. My husband has been hovering with the cake knife, and I left the cake unattended today. Gulp, will it be intact when I get home?

Moving and Handling theory and practical course.

Super Sam was flying without his cape when his wheelchair went airborne! Quite a few of us have lifted a person in a wheelchair before. Accidentally, of course, it happened today in my training session. One of the vital facts is to remember to unfasten the person’s waist belt.

We had a fantastic day working at St Martin’s CE Primary School, part of the Frays Academy Trust. Sam was there to help me deliver a practical and theory course. Tomorrow, I will continue to help them with their risk assessments and management of their paperwork. Thank you for the laughter and staff participation I loved today.

This course will make you think about your posture

When I deliver a course, I tell the participants that if they change how they do one thing in their life after attending my Moving and Handling theory course, I have guided, advised, and educated them, and  I am happy and have done my job.

If, as a result of attending my course, you have not changed anything about how you move and handle things in your life but have started to think about how you do things, I am happy as I have planted a thought that can grow into action.

I have guided, advised and educated you.

You can attend many courses, but you are the boss of your own body and have to take responsibility for your actions or inactions. When it comes down to it, you are the only person who can change what you do and how to do it.
We have one body and one back. It’s not too late to change how you do things.

New Year Resolution

Many people make New Year resolutions about what they will improve or do at this time.
When running a course, I ask people about their job roles. Sometimes, people say, ‘I am just a ‘…. they may say a classroom or a learning support assistant.
One of the many definitions of ‘just’ appears to be ‘only’.
When I hear this, my response is, please do not use the phrase ‘I am just a. It sounds like you feel your role is not essential. These words do not form part of your job description.
It does not matter what role you play in a company. All staff help to contribute to a company’s success.
In this instance, all staff help contribute to the care and education of a new generation of learners.
Many people choose their job roles depending on their family commitments, passions or other reasons.

My aim this year is when I am running a moving and handling course, or I meet anyone and introduce myself, and I ask staff for their job role to encourage all staff everywhere. To say ‘I am a or my job is for all staff to be proud of a job title.’
Hopefully, this will raise people’s self-esteem.

My other aim is to pick up my hula hoops more often and give them a twirl.

Happy New Year

A clean desk

I did this every Monday at my old place of work; I stripped everything off my desk. I would clean the desk, monitors, mouse, and keyboard.
There is no way this tradition will change now that I’m self-employed. If you do not do this already, take a moment to take everything off your desk and give everything a good clean. You could do it on a Friday afternoon.
Do your best not to eat at your desk. It is not good for you.
We all need a break, not to mention that poor keyboard that could be catching the crumbs! Have a good week.

Going Solo

After 23 years at Addington School, I have left to embark on a new adventure. I decided to set up my own business. I will offer training and consultancy to organisations whose staff work for children and young people with temporary or permanent physical disabilities, including those with special educational needs (SEND) or complex handling needs. Local physiotherapists and occupational therapists have told me there is a lack of specialised training and support with the paperwork involved in managing moving and handling when working with children and young people with temporary or permanent physical disabilities. I aim to change that with my new company.
